Upper Suspension
Dressage question, breeds in upper level dressage?
So I have heard that most TBs don’t make it to upper level dressage, because they are not as good as some warmbloods (specifically in the trot).
Its the suspension, right? So a TB would have a hard time getting to upper levels?
And what exactly IS the suspension? The tendon structure?
Its sort of depressing…. I don’t know if I could ever afford a warmblood. A little dream crushing. Ah well……
I’m sorry I wasn’t clear. I know what suspension is, but what I meant to say, is what DETERMINES the suspension a horse can have? The tendons?
Suspension is the amount of “air time” the horse gets at the trot and canter. An upper level dressage horse has developed huge hind quarters and topline; this allows him to carry himself by bounding up off the ground.
Warmbloods have been bred to do just this for over 400 years. TBs have been bred to run fast, and to do that, they need to have very strong shoulders, and have limited air time; they can’t accelerate when their feet are off the ground. They have to be able to push off often and hard.
All that being said, it is not to say that there won’t be that rare TB who probably was never raced, and is built and trained to work off his rear. This would be rare, but not impossible. As recently as 40 years ago, the horses winning at Olympic level dressage were TB or Selle Frances (however that is spelled, sorry)
It is interesting to me that German and Dutch breeders are now breeding English TBs into their programs to add some “fire” to the often lazy warmbloods. What is popular for dressage may continue to evolve, and those big, heavy boned horses are becoming obsolete.
edit==Suspension is determined by the strength of the topline, not the part of the horse that is in direct contact with the ground. The ring of muscles that starts at the poll, goes along the top of the neck, (especially the part just in front of the withers where many TBs have a dip) along the back, around the back of the haunches, and all the way up to the elbows via the abdominal muscles. This ring of muscles is very dense in warmbloods.
Upper Suspension
Control Arm: Key Acura Suspension Part
The control arm, also called wishbone suspension, installed on the Acura drive train is a flat and roughly triangular subframe used by the wheels to pivot while accelerating. Designed with both broad and narrow ends, the Acura control arm attaches the wheels to the drive shaft and forms an assembly that provides steering capability. The broad end of the Acura control arm is connected to the chassis and pivots on a bushing or cylindrical linings that reduce friction and restrains the auto parts from going in all directions. During acceleration the broad end of the Acura control arm manages the motion of the wheel and synchronizes it with the body of the car. The narrow end, on the other hand, attaches to the steering knuckle while pivoting on a ball joint.
In an Acura, up to eight control arms are fitted—with two on each wheel. They consist of an upper control arm and a lower control arm. The lower control arms provide the suspension setting parts with a rotational movement whenever the car is cornering. It complements the suspension system in dispersing chassis flex for convenient riding. Other than the aforementioned functions, the Acura control arm enables the coil springs to respond to the axle and wheel assembly while encountering the bumps and bruises along the way. The pivots at the other end of the control arm, which are attached to the chassis, allow for the up-and-down motion of the coil springs to absorb the shocks during bumps
Aside from its pivot-joint functionality, the Acura control arm likewise allows the suspension of the car to respond to the axle and wheel assembly during bumps. The pivots at either end of the Acura control arm facilitate an upward and downward motion of the coil springs so bumps are less felt in the car’s cabin. By allowing a steady, regulated movement of the suspension parts, the Acura control arm synchronizes all four tires to the motion of the car. It is equipped with cylindrical bushings to reduce friction and improve car handling. The considerably less-traction contact surface where the rubber meets the road results in better steering and tire wear-out rate.

Rear upper trailing arm?
I just bought my first car, a 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and the previous owner made me promise to get a part (she couldn’t remember the name of it, she’s in her 70′s) fixed before I started driving it. So I went through the old service records and found from about six months back that the shop she went to had put “needs rear upper trailing arm” on her receipt. I called a local junkyard and they said they have it for $50. I’m going down to get it today, and my cousin who is a mechanic is going to put it on for me.
My questions it, what is it, exactly? I know it’s part of the suspension and I did some research but all I could find was info on a control arm. Are they the same thing?
Yes they are the same thing it stabilizes your suspension to stop the vehicle having too much roll from side to side.
