Magic the Gathering cards – how do you tell which generation they are?

I have a box filled with MTG cards and want to sell them, I can look up which ones are rare but I have no idea what generation they are.
Scott C’s answer was very informative – but how do I tell if my cards are 4th, 5th, 6th generation etc?

In most cases, you can tell what set a card is from by its expansion symbol, located on the right side of the card between the illustration and the text box. A list of all expansion symbols is available here:

If your card has no expansion symbol, then it is from Alpha, Beta, Unlimited, Revised, Fourth Edition, or Fifth Edition. These can be told apart as follows:

* Alpha cards have black borders, and have differently shaped corners than any other magic cards.
* Beta cards have black borders and have same same shaped corners as other non-Alpha cards.
* Fourth Edition cards have the copyright date 1995 at the very bottom.
* Fifth Edition cards have the copyright date 1997 at the very bottom.

If you have a card which is white-bordered and has no copyright date at the bottom, then it is either from Unlimited or Revised. It is tougher to tell these apart. The most concrete way is that the card borders are different–Unlimited cards have a border with a double bevel, and Revised cards have a border with a single bevel.
