Boise State Football Predictions 2010
The Boise State Broncos will wear the target on their backs this season as expectations are through the roof. Chris Peterson has turned down numerous job opportunities to finish what he started at Boise and this season could be the reason why. The Broncos have gone 49-4 under Peterson and will attempt to duplicate 2009′s undefeated season. Boise’s odds of winning a national title this season are 12 to 1. This is one of the most potent offenses in the country behind the leadership of QB Kellen Moore. Boise can hurt opponents through the air or on the ground in a variety of different sets and styles. Moore was off the charts as a sophomore following a freshman season that saw him throw for over 3400 yards and 25 touchdowns. He was second in the nation in pass efficiency and his 39-3 td/int ratio is mind numbing. The lefty signal caller seems incredibly poised for his age and has the aura of a winner. Jeremy Avery and Doug Martin rushed for a combined 1900 yards and 21 touchdowns last season. Avery was a 2nd team all conference selection and provides the speed while Martin is more of a bruiser. WR Titus Young adjusted nicely to the Division 1 level coming over from junior college. His 79 catches led the team as did his 1041 yards receiving. Kickoff returns is another area Young excels in, taking two the distance in 09′. Austin Pettis fractured his leg late in the season, but still managed to lead the team in td receptions with 14. These two are extremely talented and will likely be playing on Sundays next year. The offensive line is a veteran group of players that should be one of the best units in college football. These guys are one of the main reasons Boise averaged 450 yards of total offense last year.
The offense receives most of the attention when analysts talk about Boise State, but the defense deserves to be noticed also. Opponents only managed 17 points/game and struggled to build any rhythm offensively. The Broncos were an amazing +21 in turnover differential due to an opportunistic defense. Former d-line coach Pete Kwiatkowski was promoted to defensive coordinator this season and inherits 10 starters. Ryan Winterswyk is a top defensive end and led Boise with nine sacks as a junior. He will team up once again with DT Billy Winn to form one of the WAC’s finest defensive lines. Winston Venable stands out at the linebacker position even though he is more of a hybrid type of player. His eight tackles for loss were tops on the team a year ago and he had numerous highlights throughout the season. The Broncos will have to replace CB Kyle Wilson, who was the rock of this team the past two years. Brandyn Thompson led the team in interceptions with six and will play the role of lockdown corner in 2010. SS Jeron Johnson is a two time 2nd team all WAC selection and recorded 91 tackles. Special teams is an area that the Broncos separate themselves from the competition and really use it to their advantage on game day.
The 2010 Boise State Broncos have all the makings of a national title contender, but how will they fair being the hunted instead of the hunter? A neutral site game against Virginia Tech will open the season on national television. Boise was in the same situation last year when Oregon came to town and absolutely dominated the Ducks. Another Oregon school will make the trip to Boise on Sept 25th when the Beavers of Oregon State arrive. These two games are really going to test the team, but if they manage to pull of two Ws it could be smooth sailing the rest of the season. The WAC as a whole does not have much offer in terms of competition forcing the school to decide in the off-season that the Mountain West is a better fit. I love this team and its coaches so will predict yet another undefeated regular season, which will earn them a shot at the national title!
